Skipping to Date

[Kita's waiting at the park entrance. In a plaid button-up over a t-shirt, with jeans. More casual than anyone would believe.

Never mind that it took an hour to get dressed.

This is why uniforms are easier. There's so many other decisions to make during the day. Add in 'Does this look appropriate for my first date ever" and it's like doing trigonometry instead of addition. But he's made it. On time.]

[Osamu's a bit more casual in a graphic t-shirt and jeans with rips in the knee (caused by shenanigans with his brother, but they looked cool, so he kept them).

He's... really nervous about this. Hopefully, he doesn't give Kita food poisoning with his food. That would suck so much.]

[He holds up the cooler with the food in it.] I... might have gone overboard. But what we don't eat, I can feed my family. If 'Tsumu is in a food coma already.

[Kita has seen Osamu almost every day for the last two years. In uniform, team gear, even the jeans he's wearing now. (With rips leftover from The Noodle Incident.) Except he looks - different -

And that strange, prickling feeling from yesterday is back. Marching down Kita's spine.]

[Something seems to be wrong with his voice? Kita coughs. Clears his throat and smiles.]

[He scoops up his own cooler, ready to head in.]

[Should they hold hands? This IS a date. Maybe. He gives his head a shake, then falls into step with Kita.]

So, I was thinking about eating at the picnic table by the pond, near the willow. You know, the one where The Noodle Incident happened.

[Maybe that wasn't the best thing to bring up just now.]

But if you want to eat someplace else, that's cool.

[And here they are. At the picnic table where The Noodle Incident happened, he ripped his jeans when he and Atsumu tried to kill each other, and everyone ended up with cold soba on them.]

So, what flavor juices did you bring. [He sits and looks at Kita expectantly.]

Kita finally has a name for this state. He's flustered. Has to take an intentional breath, the way he does before some games. It's all right. He's never practiced this, but isn't that what dates are for?

This is practice.

Steadied, he lines up the drinks for inspection.]

Matcha, melon, grape, and apple.

[He opens his cooler and hands a large onigiri that had tuna mayo filling over to Kita.]

[He pulls out a plain one for himself.]

[Kita slides the melon to Osamu, accepts the onigiri. Then smiles. Claps both hands together. With a polite - ]

[- He takes the first bite. Eyes going wide.]

I've been making these since I was little. First thing I helped my mom make when I was six.

[Kita's hardly a picky eater. Would have been happy with whatever came out of the cooler.

But this is specific. For him. Because, in passing, he mentioned liking Tuna Mayo. It's a strange feeling. Being the focus of observation. Kita's not quite sure what to do with it.
